Through maxillofacial surgery, more or less extensive bone sites can be reconstructed. The oldest dedentitions, the most resorbed ridges, and bone that is almost non-existent, are no longer insurmountable problems. Maxillofacial surgeons are able to create ideal anatomical and aesthetic conditions.

Because of severe problems caused by bone materials from autogenous, homogenous, and xenogenous sources, significant efforts were made to find adequate substitution materials. The main challenge concerning these materials was obtaining results that were comparable to those with autografts.

These results are related to the biological properties therefore, to the capacity to generate bone formation and integration in order to obtain physiological bone remodelling.
